Self Portrait of a Soul by Gregory-Fricker Self Portrait of a Soul by Gregory-Fricker
Traditional

Acrylic on board

30x30 inches

surrealist self portrait of sorts

The basis of the idea was the creation of a living creature born of manifest aspects of my own personality.

Pride, hope, shame etc...

My face is only worn as a mask to emphasize that a body is simply a vessel, not the true person.

I chose to represent life experience as glowing mathematical equations in the air because the relative measurements we assign personal experience are what separate the individual from the whole and result in a unique entity.

All the anatomical features used in the painting are my own.

This is as bizarre but as visually appealing as it gets...it's a real challenge trying to interpret, and for that it deserves a lot of credit

This comment means a great deal to me DTKinetic. It'll certainly be one I pull out when I'm frustrated and questioning my art.

Thank you

It is a beautiful depiction of one self. I like how your face is a mask, it really speaks to me. This is an excellent piece of work my friend.

This needs to win the contest, because this is way beyond the meaning of a self portrait.
Can I ask what the claws on the feet are for?

the less long-winded answer is; It's meant to represent tension and a constantly shifting balance.

They aren't claws though. The subject is balanced on appendages which are closer to hands than feet. All weight is resting on what amount to fingertips. Tension, discomfort, and struggle basically. Caused by my own decisions as many times as not : ).

Wow! Absolutely amazing! At first, I look at it and was like: what, the fuck? Then I scrolled down and read the description, looked back up and it really made sense (: What a great idea, and good luck!

You're absolutely right about people not reading artwork descriptions. People are forever giving me photoshop tips and I'm like...."uh....traditional means this isn't digitally created man"

or they'll say "It doesn't look happy, maybe if she were smiling more?" and I'm like ...."uh...if she was smiling more it wouldn't be a very convincing piece about going jumper yeah?"

lol
